Osprey Aura Women's Pack Review

Purchasing a backpacking pack is a big investment.  A good pack will cost upwards of $250- $350, but it is an investment that will last you for years if taken care of properly.  When deciding what pack to purchase, the same logic applies to backpacking packs as to purchasing a day pack.  Below is the criteria posted within my review of the Osprey Day Pack, with a few additions.

Some things to consider when buying a day pack:

  • What’s your Budget?

  • What brand do you like?

  • How big of a pack do you need (packs are measured in liters or cubic inches)?

  • What extra features might you want with the pack?

  • How well does it fit/How comfortable is it?

  • What size do you wear? (make sure to get measured)

  • On average, how long are your backpacking trips going to be?

  • What color do you want?

I took Dylan with me to REI to purchase my pack, he has been on several backpacking trips and was a very good resource to have in addition to the research I did ahead of time.  If you have a more experienced hiking buddy that can give you advice on a pack, then I highly recommend taking them with you!

I purchased the Osprey Aura 65 Liter Pack.  The gal that helped me at REI said they nicknamed it the "Kohala Pack" because it hugs you when you put it on. She was not exaggerating, when there is no weight in the pack I can simply put the hip straps around my waist and the pack will stay on my back.  It does not hug you tightly, it is a snug but comfortable hug around your waist.  The pack itself is easier to get on than off, getting out of it can require a bit of an acrobatic performance.  My pack is good for 1-2 night trips, if you are looking for something that will last you for 3-4 day trips you will need to get a bigger pack.

This pack has the anti gravity frame, making a 25-30 pound pack feel significantly lighter.  It keeps the weight off your shoulders and back very well and is comfortable for a full day of hiking.   Dylan has nicknamed it the “fat pack” because when it is full, it does look rather fat! Aside from it not looking as aesthetically pleasing when it is full and being slightly difficult to get out of, it is a wonderful pack that will take you many miles with ease and a little style.
